Vancouver - Calgary's PortVancouver is Calgary's port. Forty per cent of all in-bound shipments to Vancouver are redistributed through Calgary. In 2004, the Port of Vancouver had total shipments of 73.9 million tonnes, 2,718 foreign vehicle arrivals and an all-time high of 1.66 million TEUs (20-foot equivalent units). It is Canada's largest and most diversified port, trading $29 billion in goods with more than 90 economies every year.
The Port of Vancouver employs 62,000 workers and adds $1.6 billion in gross domestic product to the economy. In 2003, the port was ranked first on North America's west coast for total cargo volume and was first in North America in total foreign exports. Rail links from Halifax, via Montreal and Toronto, also bring goods from eastern ports through Calgary for distribution.
