Book Publishing 101
Saturday April 22 2006 at 8:30 AM until 4:00 PM
Is there a book in you? If you’ve ever wanted to write the Great Canadian Novel or market your business through books, don’t miss this workshop. Writing a book is perhaps the best way to tell your story, inspire others or show your expertise. Books offer perceived credibility and expertise in your field. However, book publishing takes a great deal of time and money. It is not for the faint of heart. The odds of an author inking a traditional publishing contract are slim and none. As an example, Self-Counsel Press, who published "Self-Publishing 101," will receive 2500 pitches annually but will only commit to 30 titles. For larger firms that produce 100 to 200 titles, the odds are they will receive close to 10,000 pitches. That means there is a large population of authors that are not being heard. They may choose to self-publish, and many of these books still get into bookstores, while others are generously sold through various venues. This workshop will alleviate some of the myths of book publishing and help you with the tools you need to oversee the process from start to finish. You will learn to: 1. Develop ideas on types of books that might help elevate your perceived credibility and area of expertise as an industry professional 2. Get started on your manuscript and how to organize it into manageable pieces and sections for paragraph and chapter development 3. How to get the best-researched printing quotes based on price and quality 4. What you need to get a book into a bookstore 5. How to find creative way to sell and promote your book Freelance Communications provides full publishing support to independent and self-publishers who want to get their message across in books. Debbie Elicksen has a strong communications and marketing background that stems over 17 years, which includes professional writing, broadcasting, media relations, public relations, and public speaking. She has authored, edited, ghosted, and project managed over 34 books. Besides editorial writing, she worked as a copywriter and has covered the National Hockey League and other professional sports as a reporter for over 12 years. The books she has worked on for other authors and publishers include fiction, motivation, sales, celebrities, business leadership, and other non-fiction. She also produces a monthly e-newsletter, Inside Publishing.
