Mayor Unveils New Stamp Cancellation Stamp Celebrates "Calgary, Heart of the New West"

June 8, 2005 (Calgary, AB) Calgary is sharing its western hospitality throughout the world with todays unveiling of a cancellation stamp featuring the Calgary, Heart of the New West brand. The brand symbolizes the proud heritage and pioneering spirit of Calgarians; the spirit that is the very foundation of todays renowned entrepreneurial drive, caring community and the nations leading economy. Calgary Mayor Dave Bronconnier unveiled the stamp at the Calgary Central Post Office on 9th Avenue SW. The first six pieces of mail to receive the cancellation stamp were postcards with greetings to the Mayors of Calgarys six sister cities (Quebec City, Jaipur India, Daqing China, Naucalpan Mexico, Daejeon Korea, Phoenix USA).
This is a great opportunity to share Alberta Centennial celebrations with the rest of the world, said Mayor Bronconnier. Calgary joins municipalities throughout Alberta in having a custom cancellation stamp to honour our provincial centennial.
The chance to reach so many people and businesses across this country and around the world is invaluable as we market the many advantages of living and working in Calgary, said Bruce Graham, President and CEO of Calgary Economic Development. We do indeed live in the Heart of the New West, and as Western Canadas business centre, more people and businesses are discovering the benefits of our and growing economy. Canada Post is proud to be here today partnering with Calgary Economic Development and Mayor Bronconnier in the launch of the Calgary, Heart of the New West Cancellation Stamp in celebration of Albertas Centennial, said Heather Millar, Retail Business Manager for Canada Post. Each community in the province chooses the design for their stamp. The Heart of the New West brand reflects the unique western heritage and energy of Calgary and its renowned hospitality. Right now there are more than 300 post offices using Alberta Centennial cancellation stamps.
In support of the Alberta Centennial Cancellation Stamp Campaign, free postcards are available at post offices throughout the province. The cards are an excellent way to build a full and comprehensive collection of the cancels of Alberta. Details are at www.canadapost.ca.
The Calgary, Heart of the New West Cancellation Stamp will be used on out-going mail from Calgary for the remainder of 2005.
