SISTER
CITIES

The
City of Calgary currently has six official Sister City Relationships:
Daqing,
People's Republic of China
"Home of the Largest Oil Field"
Date established: May 16, 1985
The City of Calgary twinned with the City of Daqing on May
16, 1985 and in many respects Daqing is truly a twin city
for Calgary given our similar geography, climate and economic
base.
Daqing is located 1600 kilometres north-east of Beijing,
in the north-eastern province of Heilongjiang, China. It
is an industrial town with a population of close to two
million, and is home to the largest oil fields in China,
and significant related industries such as refining and
petrochemicals. The province of Heilongjiang is twinned
with Alberta and its capital, the city of Harbin, is twinned
with Edmonton.
This
relationship has been one of Calgary's most successful relationships
in terms of economic benefits and exchange of technical
expertise. Some projects Calgary has been asked to be involved
with include developing methods of pollution control, technical
consulting for a chemical plant, and oilfield development.
Two Calgary schools, Bishop Carroll Senior High School and
Alice M. Curtis Elementary School have also twinned with
Daqing schools to foster this relationship.
In honour of the sister city relationship, the two cities
have renamed a street in Daqing "Calgary Road" and an avenue
in Calgary's Chinatown, "Daqing Avenue".
A
delegation from Daqing was in Calgary during May of 2000
to celebrate the fifteenth anniversary of the twinning relationship.
