Located one hour from the majestic Rocky
Mountains, the Calgary region offers its citizens unlimited recreational
opportunities. While in Calgary, you can:
- Ski any number of world class mountains, including
the Olympic mountain (Nakiska)
- Fish in one of the finest trout rivers in
North America (the Bow River)
- Hike the trails and mountains of Kananaskis
or Banff National Park
- Enjoy a game of golf at one of the country's
most beautiful and challenging golf courses.
One need not leave the city to enjoy
leisure activities though. Calgary boasts numerous natural park areas
to enjoy year-round, along with one of Canada's finest pathway systems.
Outdoor enthusiasts can explore approximately 300 kilometers (180 miles)
of paved walking and cycling paths, winding through nearly 3,300 hectares
(8,000 acres) of natural areas and parkland.
Numerous world-class recreational
facilities, a legacy of the 1988 Olympics, can be found in Calgary. The
city also hosts a multitude of international sporting events year round
and is home to several professional sports teams.
In addition, Calgarians actively
volunteer their leisure time. Whether it be assisting nearly 1000 professional,
social, cultural and religious organizations, or towards organizing world-caliber
community events such as the 1988 Winter Olympic Games, 2000 World Petroleum
Congress, or 2005 Goodwill Games, Calgarians are known for their volunteer
spirit.
Calgary has a broad base of organized
clubs, associations and societies, including approximately 130 professional
and business organizations. These organizations are representative of
a large component of the technical and energy related professions but
also include organizations from almost every business sector. More than
80 trade, industry and labor organizations meet regularly. One in every
three Calgarians is a volunteer, supporting over 130 charitable organizations
located in the city. Calgary's reputation and goodwill, along with the
generosity of its citizens, has allowed these organizations to flourish.
The largest sector of clubs, associations and societies are of a civic
or social nature.
