CALGARY, September 27, 2000: Today Mayor Al Duerr joined
representatives from Promoting Calgary Inc., Calgary 2000 and SAIT to
launch the Calgary Gateways Project. "This unique project marks Calgary's
millennium and profiles our new community brand", states Mayor Duerr.
The Calgary Gateways Project is an ideas competition
for Calgary's post-secondary students. Its goal is to design five permanent
road signs that will welcome visitors to Calgary. Each winning sign will
be constructed and placed at one of the five major gateways into the city.
The five themes and locations are as follows:
- Sports: (professional/amateur, recreation,
fun) -West Entrance (west of COP, 16 Ave. NW)
- Energy: (oil & gas, windpower, petrochemical,
head offices, business)- North Entrance (Deerfoot trail north)
- Western Heritage: (First Nations, pioneers,
agriculture, ranching)- South Entrance (Macleod Trail./22X)
- Celebrating Calgary's People: (cultural diversity,
community spirit, volunteers, international/global community)- East
Entrance (16 Ave NE)
- Technology Centre: (progressive, high tech,
future oriented, entrepreneurial, innovative)- Airport Entrance (Barlow
Trail South)
"Calgary loves to welcome the world. These new signs
will welcome visitors for many years to come", comments Georgine Ulmer,
Promoting Calgary Inc. President & CEO. "In addition to welcoming visitors,
these signs will also mark the city's boundaries at the beginning of the
new millennium", states Carol Ryder, Calgary 2000 Executive Director.
The ideas competition will take place between September
27-November 27, 2000. Student competition packages are available at the
SAIT Information & Communications Technologies Department commencing September
27. Winners will be announced on December 4. Five $1000 cash prizes will
be awarded for each of the winning submissions. "The SAIT Information
and Communications Technologies Department has agreed to facilitate student
involvement from Calgary's post-secondary institutes, as well as distribute
the competition packages", states Irene Lewis, SAIT President, "this project
provides a great opportunity for our students to show how creative they
really are".
