NEW ORGANIZATION FORMED TO STRENGTHEN CALGARY'S
INTERNATIONAL PARTNERSHIPS
Creation of the Calgary Sister Cities Commission Will
Stimulate Community Economic Development
Calgary, Alberta (May 7, 2001) -Promoting Calgary Inc.
an organization designed to foster and facilitate community economic development,
today launched at International Business Week 2001, the Calgary Sister
Cities Commission, the only organization of its kind in Canada. The Calgary
Sister Cities Commission is committed to creating and strengthening partnerships
between the city of Calgary and its six Sister Cities.
"The formation of this organization will be a tremendous
benefit to Calgary's community economic development," said Georgine Ulmer,
President and CEO of Promoting Calgary Inc. "Knowledge is a key resource
in this global economy, and the Calgary Sister Cities Commission will
help to connect Calgarians, their businesses and their community to the
world. By raising our profile with our sister cities, Calgary will experience
new opportunities that will enhance our quality of life, capitalize on
the strengths of our diverse population and stimulate community economic
development."
Calgary began establishing relationships with cities
around the world as early as 1956, but this is the first time a strategic
business plan encompassing economic, cultural, educational, and social
foundations has been directed to all of its sister cities. Calgary's Sister
Cities are:
1. Daejeon, South Korea
2. Daqing, China
3. Jaipur, India
4. Naucalpan, Mexico
5. Phoenix, U.S.A
6. Quebec City, Canada
The Calgary Sister Cities Commission is responsible
for creating an environment in which community economic development initiatives
can be implemented, and providing opportunities for Calgarians to experience
and explore other cultures through long-term community partnerships. The
commission's volunteer executive committee is comprised of social, cultural,
educational, and business representatives, as well as representative working
groups for each sister city.
"Each of Calgary's sister cities offer rich cultures,
and diverse economies. I am pleased to be part of the team that is working
to connect Calgarians globally," said Bev Longstaff, Chair of the Calgary
Sister Cities Commission. "Through our efforts to develop and support
initiatives such as student and teacher exchange programs and participating
in the Trilateral Information Technology Conference in September, Calgarians
will have access to tremendous opportunities offered by a free flow of
knowledge and cultures."
