Heart of the New West: Calgary unveils new identity
for promoting city
CALGARY, March 9 - Calgary Mayor Al Duerr today introduced
Calgarians to a new visual identity that will be the centrepiece of the
city's promotional activities.
The identity includes a stylized image sitting on top
of the word 'Calgary' with a new civic slogan 'Heart of the New West'
below. The image shown in red, a color emblematic of Calgary, is a stylized
cowboy hat but also evokes mountains, chinook winds and the Canadian Airlines
Saddledome. The image is hand-drawn to reflect the human qualities of
the city as well as the arts, while the vitality of the stroke speaks
to Calgary's energy and spirit.
Mayor Duerr explained that the positioning line 'Heart
of the New West' and the new visual identity unite Calgary's past, present
and future in a powerful way.
"Calgary has experienced significant growth in the
past few years. It is important to consider where our city has come from
and where we want to go, so we can determine how to position Calgary in
the future," says Mayor Duerr. "In marketing terms, the time was right
to create a new brand for the city - one that speaks to our collective
values, captures our spirit and reflects the pride we share in our community."
Promoting Calgary Inc., the city's umbrella promotional
authority, was responsible for undertaking the development of the new
brand. The new identity was developed after a comprehensive process that
included:
- an extensive review of research on perceptions
of Calgary, at home and abroad;
- analysis of how other cities around the world
have successfully positioned themselves;
- extensive personal interviews with Calgarians
from all walks of life; and
- focus group research to confirm the appropriateness
of the project's results.
The new identity belongs to all Calgarians. It will
be used, domestically and internationally, by the city's agencies that
share a promotional mandate including Promoting Calgary Inc., the Calgary
Economic Development Authority, the Calgary Convention and Visitors Bureau,
the Calgary Research and Development Authority and the Calgary Convention
Centre Authority. Calgarians and the business community will also be encouraged
to use this new identity in their promotional activities.
According to Promoting Calgary Inc. President & CEO
Georgine Ulmer, the new brand clearly delivers what Calgary needs today
and tomorrow.
"We believe this new identity captures what's special
and unique about the city we love," she says. "With a diversified, international
economy, Calgary now represents what we think of as 'the new west'. At
the same time, culture and community are very important in maintaining
the civic 'heart' that we're all so proud of."
