CALGARY: HEART OF THE NEW WEST COFFEE TABLE BOOK AVAILABLE
Photo-Journal Celebrates Calgary's Dynamic Spirit
Calgary, Alberta (December 5, 2001) -
"Calgary: Heart of the New West" a coffee-table-style photo-journal
is being launched today (5 pm). Calgary Inc. and Towery Publishing partnered
to produce this book celebrating Calgary's dynamic spirit and diversity.
A closer look at "Calgary: Heart of the New West" is available
online at www.calgary-promote.com.
"In
the last 5 years, our region has grown by over 25 percent and the number
of jobs in our city has grown by 5 percent per year, making our community
the fastest growing city in Canada," said Leann Hackman-Carty, Vice
President Calgary Inc. "This publication gives us a chance to showcase
our modern city while reflecting on the importance of our heritage."
Calgary's
diversity creates a vibrant energy that can be seen and felt throughout
the city; from the diversification of its economy from the traditional
oil industry to the technology intensive operations of today, to Calgary's
thriving arts scene. Calgary also respects its history evidenced by such
landmarks as the famous 1886 Buffalo Café and the highly popular
Calgary Stampede, a 10-day event held each July.
Calgarians
themselves made valuable contributions to this publication. CFCN News
co-anchor and co-producer Darrel Janz wrote the introductory essay, hundreds
of outstanding photographs were gathered from leading Calgary photographers,
and Calgary writer Sari Shernofsky profiled leading businesses and institutions.
"The
majority of us who live and work in this jewel of the Alberta foothills
have adopted Calgary. Or maybe it would be more appropriate to say it
has adopted us," wrote Darrel Janz. "This beautiful city took
us in and, somewhere along the way, leaving became unthinkable."
Janz,
a Saskatchewan native who became a local in 1973 recalls his early memories
and first impressions of the city, specifically the mountain vista that
greeted him as he approached from the east, "the mountains were still
covered with snow, while the foothills were bare, waiting for the first
green grass and wildflowers to appear." He offers readers a warm
invitation to turn the page and see Calgary in its entire splendor as
the Heart of the New West.
"Calgary:
Heart of the New West" is part of Towery Publishing's Urban Tapestry
Series, an ongoing collection of coffee-table-style photo-journals, each
highlighting an individual community. To date, more than 90 titles have
been published in such cities as New York, Los Angeles, Orlando, Toronto,
Phoenix, Chicago, Vancouver, St. Louis, and Dallas.

Darrel Janz Biography
Janz's
career has had many high points, including his coverage of the 1970 October
Crisis in Montreal and the 1984 Olympic games in Los Angeles. Janz reported
on Calgary's successful bid to the International Olympic Committee to
host the 1988 Olympic Winter Games, and as the Games grew closer, he served
as vice-chairman of the organizing committee, helping to co-ordinate venue
announcers for all sporting events. Among the most special memories of
his career is a December 1995 trip to Bosnia and Croatia to cover Operation
Christmas Child's distribution of gifts to kids who had just come through
four years of war. With photographer Kevin Green, Janz produced a documentary
about the event. Titled From a Child's Hand, the film won a Can Pro Gold
Award. Since 1975, Janz has used his background as a teacher to train
new broadcasters at both the Southern Alberta Institute of Technology
and Mount Royal College. In fact, two of his former students are now his
bosses in the CFCN newsroom. Janz is an active member of the Calgary community
through organizations including the Heart and Stroke Foundation and the
Easter Seal Ability Council. In his spare time, Janz takes to the slopes
to ski, an activity he mastered at the age of 47.
