Quality of Life Enhancement
We are leading an industry cluster initiative
that is unique to the Calgary region. Cluster work elsewhere tends to
focus on encouraging expansion of economic opportunity without linking
it to many other components of community life that create quality of life.
C-Prosperity strategically focuses on
targeted development that is globally competitive and at the same time
responsive to quality of life issues. In this "balanced" view of the world,
growth for growth sake is replaced by a view that quality growth is good.
Driven by community leaders, C-Prosperity
is shaped by the values of people here; stemming from a focus on a balance
between economic prosperity and quality of life. A healthy regional economy
benefits quality of life, and it is recognized that enhancing quality
of life creates an environment for sustainable economic growth.
Quality of life interests combine to let
us love where we live - whether it is a good job, clean air and water,
affordable housing, recreation opportunity, quality schooling, or competitive
taxation. We call this achievement of balance "sustainable prosperity".
While government, institutions and business
are typically good at speaking the same language to each other, C-Prosperity
develops relationships between these "cultures". A cross-section of community
involvement allows us to talk meaningfully and passionately about the
prosperous, sustainable future we want to shape for the Calgary Region.
Focus groups will be conducted in the
summer months to incorporate quality of life discussion in the cluster
development decision making process. A Sustainable Prosperity Index consisting
of economic, social and environmental indicators is being developed to
measure progress on enhancing quality of life.
