Calgary has had an extremely strong construction industry, both
residential and non-residential.
Since 1990, new housing starts in Calgary have outpaced the national
average. Over the past decade, Calgary has averaged an 8% per year
increase in housing starts vs. the national average of -3%.
Residential building permits account for 59% of all new building
in Calgary and is stronger than both Alberta and Canada. In 1998,
Calgary accounted for 45% of Alberta’s new building permits, and

Calgary’s Downtown has seen more commercial construction in the
past five years than any other Downtown in Canada.
