Clean
Calgarians are proud of their city's fresh air, big blue sky, sunshine,
green parks, clean rivers and clear, crisp view of the Rocky Mountains.
This close connection to the land and surrounding environment has
greatly influenced the personality of the city and its citizens.
Calgarians are known for their warm western spirit, friendliness
and openness.
More ways to get around: Calgary commuters have been blessed
with a number of efficient transportation alternatives, including
a full-service public transportation system.
Calgary boasts
one of Canada's finest pathway systems, including 300 kilometres
(180 miles) of paved walking and cycling paths. In 1997, more than
22,000 residents (5% of Calgary's work force) walked to work on
a regular basis. As well, 4,320 Calgary residents chose to bike
to their place of employment.
Calgary's downtown
is connected by a +15 elevated walkway system, where as a person
can essentially travel from one end of downtown to the other without
going outside. This is ideal for rainy or colder winter days and
probably contributes to the high number of people who choose to
leave their vehicles at home.
According to
the City of Calgary Transportation Department, 1999 figures,. 95%
of all work trips, by auto, are less than 30 minutes in duration.
Less bad air: According to Alberta Environment, in 1998,
good air quality was reported over 98% of the time at Calgary monitoring
stations. Good air quality occurred 100% of the time at the Calgary
Central and Calgary Northwest monitoring station. (Source: Alberta
Environment).
