Calgary
Gateways Project
Frequently
Asked Questions
Q.
Why are you holding a competition to find designs for the new signs?
A. Entrance
signs of major cities need to reflect the nature of the community.
We would like to involve the community wherever possible in this
project.
Q. Why is
the competition limited to post secondary students only?
A. Post secondary
students have the necessary skills and means with which to work
on this project. It was felt that it would be better to gain a young
perspective on the city of Calgary, and involve many people rather
than a small group of professionals.
Q. What happens
if I am late for any of the competition deadlines?
A. A competition
like this has to be run with strict guidelines. Unfortunately, no
late entries will be accepted under any circumstance. So if you
are taking part in the competition, make sure that you have your
entries in well ahead of the closing time.
Q. Who do
you consider to be a post secondary student?
A. For the purposes
of this competition, any person who is registered as a full- or
part-time student at one of the recognized post secondary public
education institutions as of January 2001 will be eligible to be
part of a team for this competition.
Q. If my
entry wins, do I have a guarantee that the sign will be built as
per my design?
A. Once the
winning entries have been determined, a further investigation into
the costs and viability of the designs will be made. Depending on
several factors, a full design or parts of a design may be built.
In some cases, a winning design may not be part of the final design.
In all cases where parts of winning designs have been used, credit
will be forthcoming to the designers.
Q. When will
the designs be built?
A. Designs will
be built when final approval and sponsorships have been determined.
This may mean that the final gateways will be in place relatively
quickly, or they may take a few years to be built.
Q. Who are
the organizations that are involved?
A. The project
is being done as an initiative of Calgary Inc., together with Calgary
2000. SAIT has agreed to facilitate student involvement. Other organizations
includes The City of Calgary, ENMAX, and the Calgary Herald. We
expect many more organizations to become involved as the project
moves forward.
